The Man Who Planted Trees: In the Footsteps of Jean Giono
A humanist dreamer committed to the environmental cause, Jean Giono, the French author and filmmaker, brought Elzéard Bouffier to life in his 1953 short story “The Man Who Planted Trees.”
Elzéard Bouffier, a fictional character and solitary shepherd, is the protagonist of this novel, who takes on the task of reforesting a deserted village that was once teeming with life.
Faced with the desolation of this barren land, Elzéard sets out on a mission to bring life back by planting acorns wherever he goes.
The interesting parallel drawn in this book turns out to be a true story, since in the 1920s, the landscape of the Pre-Alps was rocky and treeless.
The simplicity and beauty of Elzéard Bouffier’s actions have served as an inspiration for raising awareness about forest conservation.
Between 1989 and 1993, more than 3,700 children from the Drôme region contributed to the reforestation of the Châtillon region.
With guidance from the Drôme Department and the National Forest Service, the Giono Forest is now a must-see hiking destination.
